Singer-Songwriter, Andrew Sheppard represented his home state of Idaho on NBC’s American Song Contest. Growing up in the high desert plains of Hailey, he was around an abundant amount of musicians as his mother was always playing and singing in rock and roll and blues bands. Skateboarding was Andrew’s initial career choice, however, due to injuries he suffered, he was forced to choose the musical path instead.
I completely enjoyed having Andrew on our show today to continue our special Wednesday series, getting to know him a little better. Having him share with us about his musical career and what his journey was like while on NBC’s American Song Contest. Be sure to watch the replay of our show and/or tune in to our podcast when it airs to hear the full story. Link to the show is below.
“Steady Machine” was the song Andrew performed on the ASC show and today for us. He told us he started writing it about 2 years ago when he was living in Nashville while doing a 30-day songwriting challenge. A challenge where he was to write one per day for 30 days and he was just becoming frustrated. Telling himself about "not taking everything so serious, to just trust the process, to just have some fun, something just for me"…stating some of his songs are darker, heavier and he just wanted to lighten it up a little.
Sheppard started out playing bass in punk rock bands in high school. Then at the age of 19, he picked up the guitar and started writing songs. He writes songs and music that isn’t a carbon copy of other country and Americana artists and that touches on subjects you don’t typically touch.
“Writing a song is something that I don’t, and won’t take for granted,”
Sheppard vows. “Every show, every tour, and every album provide
me with new insight and a new way of looking at life. It helps me grow
as a person and an artist and I want to see where that takes
me for the rest of my life.”
No matter how his music hits you, it’ll give you a glimpse of where you’ve been and where you’re going. Andrew Sheppard- A straight shot of life.
