Gabrielle Metz is a singer-songwriter from Gadsden, Alabama. At age 14, she began writing songs when she bought her first guitar and taught herself to play.
Gabrielle has been nominated for Best Female Country in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 and Best New Artist in 2018 and 2019 in the Alabama Music Awards. Gabrielle is also on Country Sways 2021 Artist to Watch. She finished high school online in order to move to Nashville as a teen, and the now 22-year-old plays frequent live shows around town.
The "Mixtape" video begins with Gabrielle in the car and turning on the radio. The song opens with just a simple guitar, and we see Gabrielle sitting in front of an outdoor fountain and also on the couch playing guitar. She sings about her varied musical tastes, and most likely, her musical influences.
Some days, she feels like the Temptations, and other days Tom Petty, Tim McGraw, or James Taylor, whom she casually refers to as JT. The video shows her wearing different outfits each day, visually representing the randomness of her taste.
I’m a mixtape, unpredictable list
No rhyme or reason to what song comes next
I’m a little bit of country, I’m a little bit rock and roll
Light on the R&B but heavy on the soul
You’ll want to rewind when I walk away
I’m a mixtape
She sings and dances in front of the Nashville skyline, the Columbia records office, the RCA building, the Municipal Auditorium, and various landmarks around Nashville. When she’s at home, she’s comfy in a retro primary colored jacket and jeans, playing her acoustic Martin but surrounded by her electric guitars. Downtown, she’s in a white t-shirt and denim jacket covered with patches like an American flag and an oversized electric guitar with her jeans. At the outdoor café by the fountain, she’s in pink jeans and a brightly patterned pink jacket over a white lace top. We even get to see her playing ping pong in a shiny black tank. True to fashion, her tastes are unpredictable.
The simple arrangement of the music is effective, showcasing her voice and keeping the song light and fun. The temptation is there to try to copy the songs she is mentioning, but she stays true to her own style. Which some days is like Queen, Neil Diamond, Sting, Chicago, or the Bee Gees.
Toward the end of the video, we also see Gabrielle playing with her dog at the dog park. Just like a “Mixtape,” you don’t know what to expect next.
