Jade Helliwell is proud of the "Woman I Am"

Jade Helliwell may live and record in Leeds, England, but her sound is straight out of Nashville. She hit the ground running in 2017 when a video of her singing with a busker went viral, and her previously released EP shot up to #8 on the UK charts and #1 on the UK Country charts. During lockdown, she stopped touring and earned fans through her livestreams, but has since returned to playing large music festivals in the UK and Australia.

Jade was named Female Vocalist of the Year three times by the British Country Music Awards and became endorsed by Yamaha, Orange amps, and even Firestone tires. Jade has been featured by Spotify on their New Music Nashville, Wild Country, and Very Nearly Nashville playlists – a notable feat for a UK country artist.

Her newest single, “Woman I Am” is the first release from her upcoming crowd-funded EP. Jade says, Woman I Am is about being unapologetically yourself. Celebrating the good bits and the bad. This song sees me owning the woman I have become, and I continue to be. I hope this will empower the listener to be proud of who they are and honour every part of themselves.”

With her smooth vocals opening the song, and launching into the rocking chorus, this is a song you can imagine on a car radio road trip and a country dance floor. The simple guitar and light percussion on the verse builds into a flawless country anthem.

I’m a woman who tries, a woman who cries

A woman who wears her heart on her sleeve

A woman who cares, a woman who dares

Don’t try underestimate me

I know what I want and how to make it mine

You’ll see, I’ll be all that I can

That’s the woman I am, the woman I am

The instrumental break after the first chorus verse features a light steel guitar, and the second verse shows off Jade’s vocal skills and range. The break before the bridge features a light banjo, and then she sings with a pop echo effect, “I don’t have to be hard, to be tough… I don’t have to be ruthless to be strong.” It’s definitely a sing along to help young ladies, and really anyone, give themselves a mental boost.

After the final chorus, she leads us in a chant, saying “Don’t be scared, baby, I’m not scared of who I am.” It’s the kind of song that makes you feel good to sing along, and one that leaves you feeling stronger each time you sing it.

Thanks, Jade, for sharing your confidence and getting us to join in and be confident in ourselves.
